Pear Tastings Going On

September 16, 2010

There are a couple of places and events that offer pear tastings, where you can go and try out a lot of different kinds of pears, some of them not so common:

The thing about pears is that they ripen from the inside out, so they can still be hard on the outside, but starting to rot on the inside. Because of this, pears are usually picked a little early, and do quite well when being transported to grocery stores. USA Pears offers the following advice about picking out pears and storing them:

  • Check the Neck™ for ripeness. “Apply gentle pressure to the neck of the pear with your thumb. If it yields to pressure, it’s ripe.”
  • Store at room temperature to ripen a pear, then refrigerate to stop it from further ripening.

  • Check out their list of pears to try.
